Acetone, a band often shrouded in obscurity, left an indelible mark on those who discovered their music. With praise from luminaries like Jason Pierce of Spiritualized, Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, and Richard Ashcroft of The Verve, Acetone's unique sound resonated deeply with those who heard it.
Sam Sweet's nonfiction novel, "Hadley, Lee, Lightcap," delves into the backstories of the trio behind Acetone, providing a glimpse into their lives and musical journey. Light in the Attic has now partnered with All Night Menu to unveil "Acetone 1992-2001," the first anthology of the band's music.
From their early days in the scuzz-rock band Spinout to their tenure as Acetone, guitarist Mark Lightcap, bassist Richie Lee, and drummer Steve Hadley crafted music that defied categorization. Fusing elements of psychedelia, surf, and country, Acetone carved out a timeless Southern California groove that set them apart in an era dominated by grunge and indie rock.
Rehearsing tirelessly in a nondescript bedroom in northeast Los Angeles, Acetone recorded hours of music onto cassettes, which remained hidden away in shoeboxes in the drummer's shed for years. Now, for the first time, these recordings are being released alongside highlights from the band's official releases.
The anthology, presented as a double LP housed in a deluxe gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket, features nine unreleased tracks meticulously restored and remastered from the original tapes. Accompanied by liner notes from Sam Sweet, the anthology serves as a companion soundtrack to his book, offering a unique perspective on the character of Los Angeles through the lens of Acetone's music.
For fans and newcomers alike, "Acetone 1992-2001" is a testament to the band's singular vision and enduring legacy—an invitation to explore the depths of their music and the spirit of a bygone era.
