GTA VI's New Soundtrack Era
Grand Theft Auto has always treated music as part of the world itself. Radio stations, licensed songs, DJs and original scoring have helped give each city its own identity, whether you're actually following a mission or simply driving around with no destination in mind.
On September 17, Rockstar finally gave us a much clearer picture of what that means for Grand Theft Auto VI. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album is now official: a 34-track collection of original songs created for the game, released in partnership with Atlantic Records.
And this isn't only a digital release. Vinyl and CD preorders opened alongside the announcement, including a surprisingly large group of exclusive vinyl variants. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album
Rockstar and Atlantic Records describe Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album as 34 original tracks created around the world of Vice City and Leonida. That distinction matters: this isn't simply a compilation of older songs licensed for the game's radio stations.
The first six songs are available now and already cover a pretty wide range of artists. Yung Lean appears with Future and Metro Boomin, Travis Scott's track is produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and the first wave also includes PinkPantheress, Fred again.., Morgan Wallen, Rauw Alejandro and Keith Richards.
Rockstar says more information about the game's dynamic score and the next generation of in-game radio is still to come, so the album is only one part of GTA VI's overall music direction.
The First Six Songs
Rockstar released six songs from the album alongside the announcement. These are the first confirmed pieces of the 34-track record:

It's a much more useful preview of the album than trying to build a tracklist from songs heard in older trailers. The remaining 28 tracks have not yet been revealed, so we're keeping those separate from previously confirmed trailer and promotional music.
Earlier GTA VI Music: “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” has already appeared in GTA VI promotion. It isn't one of the six songs Rockstar announced for The Album today, so we're treating it as part of the wider musical picture around the game rather than calling it an album track.
Earlier GTA VI Music: “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”
Wang Chung's “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” is another familiar piece of GTA VI's pre-release music. Its bright 1980s production fits naturally with the neon-heavy Vice City imagery we've seen so far, but it should not be confused with one of today's newly announced original album tracks.
Earlier GTA VI Music: “Love Is a Long Road”
Tom Petty's “Love Is a Long Road” was the song that introduced GTA VI to the world in the first trailer. It remains one of the tracks most closely associated with the game, but it is separate from the six original songs currently confirmed for Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.
What We Know About GTA VI's Music
Today's announcement clears up one part of GTA VI's music without revealing everything. The Album is a 34-song collection of original music, while Rockstar is separately teasing more information about the dynamic score and its next evolution of in-game radio.
That distinction is worth keeping in mind. GTA has traditionally mixed licensed radio music, DJs and talk programming with original scoring. We now know much more about the standalone album, but the full radio lineup and score are still another story.

We don't have to speculate about a GTA VI vinyl release anymore. First Impressions
The biggest change since we first published this article is that GTA VI's soundtrack is no longer something we have to piece together entirely from trailers. Rockstar has now separated The Album into a clear 34-track release, and the first six songs give it a much more contemporary identity than the older licensed music heard throughout the game's marketing.
We're especially interested in how that album fits beside the radio stations and dynamic score once the game arrives. Rockstar is deliberately treating those as separate parts of GTA VI's music, and there is still plenty we don't know about either one.
For physical collectors, though, the picture is already unusually complete.
