"The Black Angels channel the essence of mid-1966—capturing the drilling guitars of early Velvet Underground performances, the raga influences of late-night Fillmore jams, and the acid-infused stomp of Austin icons the 13th Floor Elevators—wherever they go, including their second album, Directions To See A Ghost. Echoes of mid-80s Spacemen 3 and the Jesus and Mary Chain resonate through the guitar sustain and Alex Maas’ chant-like vocals. But Maas is aware of the present. ‘You say the Beatles stopped the war,’ he sings in ‘Never/Ever.’ ‘They might’ve helped to find a cure/But it’s still not over.’ Nevertheless, this music works wonders.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone
When we last encountered The Black Angels, they were under the desert sun somewhere outside of Austin, Texas. Two years later, night has descended and the spirits have emerged. It’s time for The Black Angels to guide us with Directions To See A Ghost.
If you’re familiar with their 2006 debut, Passover, you’ll know that The Black Angels’ music alone is enough to summon spirits. Their sound, dubbed "hypno-drone 'n' roll," evokes long peyote-fueled nights, dreams of a new world order, and hazy memories of the darker side of 60s psychedelia.
The Black Angels formed in Austin, Texas, in 2004, originally consisting of six members (now five) from diverse backgrounds. Singer/guitarist Christian Bland, the son of a Presbyterian Pastor, was raised in a devoutly religious household. Bassist/guitarist Nate Ryan was born on a cult compound, and drummer Stephanie Bailey claims descent from Davy Crockett. Both she and Alex Maas (vocals/guitar) believe a little girl in a red linen dress haunts the group’s home.
