SAUDADE stands as one of Masayoshi Takanaka's defining achievements in the Japanese fusion movement of the early 1980s. Originally issued in September 1982 on Kitty Records, this instrumental set helped cement Takanaka's reputation as a resort-guitar innovator whose melodic funk and fusion phrasing crossed over to international audiences. Produced by Narada Michael Walden and recorded at THE AUTOMATT in San Francisco, the album pairs Takanaka's lyrical lead guitar with T.M. Stevens on bass and Sheila E. on percussion for a relaxed, dance-forward session that became the first Japanese instrumental album to reach number one on the Oricon charts.
Universal Music Japan presents this 50th-anniversary reissue as part of a remastered Kitty Years series cut at Abbey Road Studios in London. Engineer Alex Wharton worked from high-resolution transfers of the original master tapes to deliver a collector-focused vinyl edition pressed on 180g clear salmon pink vinyl inspired by the jacket artwork. This Japanese import LP is an essential pickup for fans tracking Takanaka's studio catalog and the global fusion reissue wave.
