Description

Akasaka Soul Funk captures the moment soul, funk, and “funky jazz” truly took hold in Japan, fueled by touring US acts, television exposure, and a growing appetite for groove-driven sound. Nippon Columbia sat at the center of this shift, simultaneously releasing major US titles through international partnerships and developing Japanese projects that absorbed those influences and pushed them into local studio language.

The Akasaka neighborhood - home to Nippon Columbia’s Tokyo studio and a historic live-and-disco circuit - became a creative hotspot where artists recorded singles and albums infused with soul and funk energy, much of it rarely heard outside Japan. This selection of ten essential tracks (1969–1977) distills that era’s raw, street-level intensity into a focused, heavyweight vinyl listen.
